180 Seconds With Ellie Hopley
We spoke to super cool artist Ellie Hopley (aka @shuturp), the gal behind those bloody great drawings you've probably seen on Instagram. Here's what she had to say.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
At what point in your life did you first learn about your field of work? What called you to it?
It was about 3-4 years ago, I was in a very bad mental state and drawing was the only thing that made me feel better!
What is the biggest sacrifice you've made in starting your own business?
I work from home, by myself, so it can be a little lonely sometimes, not working with lots of people like I used to! I have to force myself to go and hang out with friends so that I don't become a hermit crab.
Name your greatest success (or something you're most proud of) in your business experience.
I designed a pair of converse! That was cool! And another thing that I can't tell you yet... AND the fact that I am making a living off my art is probably the thing I am the MOST proud of.
What does creativity mean to you?
Being your TRUE self. Being as weird as you wanna be!
What is your go-to when you need inspiration or to get out of a creative rut?
I have a look at some of my fav artists and usually that helps otherwise I just don't create anything until my inspiration comes back! No point drawing something that you don't even feel.
What quotation or saying inspires and motivates you to be yourself and do what you love?
JUST BE KIND. I try to be kind to everyone because you don't know what they could be going through.
Name a fear that keeps you up at night.
I try not to think about stuff that COULD happen and just focus on the amazing shit that's already happening.
In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?
Love myself. Give myself breaks. Reflect on everything that I have done.
Do you have any tools or practices that you use to look after your mental health and keep yourself in check?
I go to the gym everyday. Draw every morning. Drink heaps of water (seriously) and got rid of shit friends that dragged me down.
What's the first thing you do every morning to start your day on the right foot?
Draw something. Anything. Even a man with 12 legs.
Which of your traits are you most proud of?
I am super sensitive and I think that is a good thing even though I cry a lot.
Name a person, past or present, whom you admire or look up to?
My mum. She has struggled with mental health most of her life and she is still here making it work!!
What does the world need more of? Less of?
More kindness!!!! Less judgement.
